This specialty update will provide attendees the opportunity to hear updates and ask questions related to some of AASHE’s core projects and initiatives. In particular, the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) will be featured along with an update on the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) project that is currently being piloted at more than 90 colleges and universities. The session will also include information on AASHE’s online Resource Center, highlights from the recent AASHE 2009 conference, and will provide audience members the opportunity to ask questions related to AASHE’s working in advancing sustainability on college and university campuses.

This session looks at how the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) supports real estate management strategies that advance an environmentally sustainable and economically prosperous future through education, publications, and resource tools provided to its members and the public.The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) has been the source for education, resources, information, and membership for real estate management professionals for more than 75 years. An affiliate of the National Association of Realtors®, IREM is the only professional real estate management association serving both the multi-family and commercial real estate sectors. With 80 U.S. chapters, 10 international chapters and several other partnerships around the globe, IREM is an international organization that also serves as an advocate on issues affecting the real estate management industry.
Membership includes more than 18,000 individual members and 515 corporate members. Collectively, IREM CPM Members in the United States manage over $1.5 trillion in real estate assets, including 8.4 million residential units and 8.4 billion net square feet of commercial space. An additional 977,400 residential units are managed by IREM ARM Members. IREM Members are employed by some of the most prestigious real estate firms in the world and nearly 70% hold upper-level management positions.

SU13: Transforming Cities: New Research and Growing Opportunities in the U.S. Green Retrofit Marketplace

The green retrofit marketplace is growing dramatically across the U.S., bolstered by an increase in government mandates and pressures arising from rapid urbanization and the need to reduce operational costs in the tenuous economy. In this session, McGraw-Hill Construction will present the findings of their latest study on the market trends, drivers and activity shaping new opportunities in green retrofit projects in the U.S., with a particular emphasis on the unique challenges and opportunities facing retrofitting in urban settings. The data will then be discussed and evaluated by a panel of green retrofit experts from three major cities across the U.S. Lessons learned and best practices will also be shared, including the visionary policies of New York City and case studies from Chicago’s Merchandise Mart and public buildings in California.

SU27: Climate+ Program: Steps to Achieving a Climate Positive Outcome

SU28 : The Evolving Recognition of Certified Wood Products in LEED
Presented by the U.S. Green Building Council
In mid-October, USGBC closed a second public comment period on proposed changes to LEED credits that recognize the use of certified wood or wood-based products. If approved by USGBC membership, the changes would require prospective forest certification schemes to adhere to the USGBC Forest Certification Benchmark if they wish for their supply of certified wood products to count towards achieving the relevant credit(s). This session will provide an update on this project, present significant comments from the public comment period, and allow for USGBC staff to further explain the rationale and goals of the work.
